When API received the call to assist a client with a routine camera survey before slip lining a pipeline, the expectation was straightforward: identify any bends within the pipeline run. Slip lining requires a clear, unobstructed path, and knowing the exact layout helps ensure a smooth installation. However, as often happens in the field, what we found was quite different.
Our inspection confirmed no bends along the pipeline, which was good news initially. But at 23.6 metres, just shortly after a clear stretch, the camera revealed a surprising change—a shift in pipeline material coupled with high levels of tuberculation. Tuberculation, those mineral deposits that build up inside old metal pipes, can cause significant problems by narrowing the diameter and affecting flow. This level of build-up made slip lining impossible for that particular section.
The camera managed to pass through this affected area, confirming the rest of the pipeline remained clear and suitable for slip lining beyond 24.8 metres. This unexpected discovery was critical: while the initial goal focused on bends, identifying the tuberculation allowed the client to plan accordingly, preventing costly issues during their project.
This experience shows how essential thorough inspections are—sometimes, you go looking for one thing and find another, equally important matter that could impact a whole operation.
